- Veterans discharged under conditions other than dishonorable
- The veteran died because of a service related disability OR
- The veteran was receiving VA pension or compensation at the time of death OR
- The veteran was entitled to receive VA pension or compensation, but decided not to reduce his/her retirement or disability pay OR
- The veteran died in a VA hospital, in a nursing home under VA contract, or while in an approved state nursing home.
People who are Eligible
VA will pay an allowance toward burial expenses. If the veteran is buried in a VA national cemetery, some or all of the cost of transporting the deceased may be reimbursed.
VA Payment- Service-Related Death
VA will pay an allowance toward burial, funeral, and plot-interment costs. If the death happened while the veteran was in a VA hospital or under VA contracted nursing home care, some or all of the costs for transporting teh deceased’s remains may be reimbursed.
VA Payment- Nonservice-Realted Death
This form is required for proof of a veteran’s military service.
DD 214
Any veteran who is honorably discharged.
Burial Flags Provided for:
- Next of kin (generally)
- When there is no next of kin, VA will furnish to a friend making request for it
Who Gets the Flag
This department is responsible for providing military funeral honors.
- The title of the program is “Honoring Those who Served.”

VA National Cemetery is Available at no Cost to:
Eligible veterans who on or after November 1, 1990, regardless of whether the grave already has one that has been privately purchased.
Eligibility for Headstone or Marker
When activated, provides all authorities with technical assistance and personnel to facilitate the difficult tasks or recovery, identification, processing, preparation, and disposition of deceased victims.
