Ventricular Tachycardias Flashcards
What is a ventricular tachycardia
Originates from a ventricular ectopic focus
What does ventricular tachycardia have the potential to precipitate
Ventricular fibrillation
Monomorphic VT
Commonly caused by MI
Polymorphic VT
Precipitated by prolongation of the QT interval
Example of polymorphic VT
Torsades de pointes
Drug causes of prolonged QT interval
Amiodarone, sotalol, TCAs, fluoxetine, chloroquinine, terfenadine, erythromicin
Electrolytes causes of prolonged QT interval
Hypocalcaemia, hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia
Conditions causing prolonged QT interval
Acute MI, myocarditis, hypothermia, subarachboid haemorrhage
WHen is immediate cardioversion indicated
Systolic BP <90, chest pain, HF
Drug therapy for VTs
Amiodarone, lidocaine, procainamide
What to do if drug therapy fails to manage VT
EPS, ICD
