embolism resulting in occlusion of an artery which supplies the small bowel.

A
Abdominal pain severe and of sudden onset, out of keeping with physical examination findings

Management of acute mesenteric ischaemia
A
Immediate laparotomy particularly if signs of advanced ischaemia (perionitis or sepsis). Poor prognosis.
