Vecuronium (Norcuron®) Flashcards
1
Q
Vecuronium - Class
A
Neuromuscular blocking agent (nondepolarizing)
2
Q
Vecuronium - Actions
A
- Skeletal muscle paralysis (including respiratory muscles)
* Prevents neuromuscular transmission by blocking the effect of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction
3
Q
Vecuronium - Indications
A
- RSI
- Skeletal muscle paralysis to facilitate endotracheal intubation
- RSI where Succinylcholine is contraindicated
4
Q
Vecuronium - Dosage/Route
A
- 0.1 mg/kg IVP initial dose
* May repeat as needed (long transports)
5
Q
Vecuronium - Side Effects
A
- Prolonged paralysis
- Bradycardia, hypotension & arrhythmias
- Excessive salivation
6
Q
Vecuronium - Contraindications
A
Pts with known hypersensitivity to the drug
7
Q
Vecuronium - Special Information
A
- Should not be administered unless persons skilled in endotracheal intubation are present
- ET equipment must be available & working
- O2 equipment, ventilatory management equipment, and emergency resuscitative equipment/drugs must be available
- Paralysis occurs within 2-3 min. and lasts for approximately 30-45 min
- Reconstitute with bacteriostatic water
- Has no effect on consciousness or pain threshold, adequate anesthesia should ALWAYS be used concurrently
- Can be used to maintain paralysis after intubation
- Use with caution in pts with renal or hepatic impairment/failure, pediatrics & elderly
- Can cause vagal stimulation resulting in bradycardia, hypotension & arrhythmias
- CANNOT be given IM
