Etomidate - Actions
A
- Rapid induction of anesthesia with minimal respiratory & cardiovascular effects
- Does not cause histamine release like other sedative/hypnotics

A
Induction agent prior to paralytic in RSI

Etomidate - Dosage/Route
A
- 0.2 - 0.4 mg/kg IVP (over 30-60 sec.) to a max of 20 mg
* May be repeated in 8-10 minutes

A
- Myoclonic skeletal muscle movement
- Hypotension
- N/V
- Apnea

Etomidate - Contraindications
A
Pts with known hypersensitivity to the drug

Etomidate - Special Information
A
- May cause transient venous pain on injection
- Use with caution in pts with marked hypotension, severe asthma, or severe cardiovascular disease
- Verapamil may interact to cause prolonged respiratory depression & apnea
- Onset of action is 10-20 seconds & lasts 10 minutes
- Rapid injection can lead to hypotension
