Atrovent - Class
A
Anticholinergic bronchodilator

Atrovent - Actions
A
- Inhibits vagally mediated reflexes by antagonizing muscarinic ACh receptors in the lungs
- Weak bronchodilator with no anti-inflammatory effects

Atrovent - Indications
A
As a supplement to agonists (Albuterol) in asthma & COPD

Atrovent - Dosage/Route
A
- 0.5 mg in 2.5 ml of NS via nebulizer
* 0.5 mg mixed with Albuterol via nebulizer (as 2nd or 3rd nebulizer treatment)

Atrovent - Side Effects
A
- Dry mouth, cough & throat irritation
* Increased intra-ocular pressure in glaucoma patients

Atrovent - Contraindications
A
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug
* Do not use in pts with severe glaucoma

Atrovent - Special Information
A
- Simultaneous administration of Atrovent & Albuterol produces a greater bronchodilation than either drug used alone
- Use with caution with hx of allergies to soybeans or peanuts (give only in nebulizer, not MDI)
- Can use aerosol mask
- Keep nebulizer upright to avoid spilling
- Must be stored in a foil container (sensitive to light)
- O2 should be at 6L minimum
- Re-evaluate pt, including lung sounds, RR, & O2 sat to determine effectiveness

A
- Refer to Pediatric Drug Guide
- Peds < 2 yrs: give 0.25 mg/dose
- Peds > 2 yrs: give 0.25 - 0.5 mg/dose
