- Has some sedative effects

Benadryl - Indications
A
- Allergic reaction - (systemic/acute urticaria, angioedema)
- Anaphylaxis (respiratory distress, threatened airway, hypotension)
- Extrapyramidral reactions (dystonic & dysphoric reactions to anti-psychotic medications)

Benadryl - Dosage/Route
A
25 - 50 mg slow IVP or deep IM

Benadryl - Side Effects
A
- Sedation
- Dried bronchial secretions
- Blurred visions
- Headache
- Palpitations
- Toxicity: seizures, coma, death

Benadryl - Contraindications
A
- “Acute” asthma attacks
* Nursing mothers

Benadryl - Special Information
A
- Cumulative depressant effects occur in presence of alcohol &/or other sedatives
- Use with caution in asthma & children under 20 lbs due to thickened bronchial secretions
- Assess effectiveness in treating allergy/anaphylaxis by observing for decrease in erythema & itching
- Assess effectiveness in treating extrapyramidral reactions by observing for a decrease in facial & neck spasms
