D50 - Indications

A
  • Suspected hypoglycemia with a glucometer reading of <60
  • Suspected hypoglycemia when unable to obtain glucometer reading
  • Suspected hyperkalemia in hemodialysis pt (widened QRS, peaked T waves, bradycardia)

D50 - Dosage/Route

A
  • Hypoglycemia or suspected hypoglycemia:
  • 25 grams slow IVP (50 ml of 50% solution)
  • May repeat if repeat glucometer remains <60
  • Suspected hyperkalemia:
  • 25 grams slow IVP (50 ml of 50% solution)

D50 - Special Information

A
  • Onset of action 1 -2 min
  • Determine glucometer reading prior to administration possible
  • Tissue necrosis occurs with infiltration: ensure that the injection is IV; aspirate before and halfway through admin
  • Assess effectiveness of admin with pt assessment
