A
- Provides sugar for rapid absorption into the bloodstream
* Principle energy source utilized by the brain and other tissues

D50 - Indications
A
- Suspected hypoglycemia with a glucometer reading of <60
- Suspected hypoglycemia when unable to obtain glucometer reading
- Suspected hyperkalemia in hemodialysis pt (widened QRS, peaked T waves, bradycardia)

D50 - Dosage/Route
A
- Hypoglycemia or suspected hypoglycemia:
- 25 grams slow IVP (50 ml of 50% solution)
- May repeat if repeat glucometer remains <60
- Suspected hyperkalemia:
- 25 grams slow IVP (50 ml of 50% solution)

Reduced serum potassium

A
None in the emergency setting

A
- Onset of action 1 -2 min
- Determine glucometer reading prior to administration possible
- Tissue necrosis occurs with infiltration: ensure that the injection is IV; aspirate before and halfway through admin
- Assess effectiveness of admin with pt assessment

- Refer to pediatric drug guide
- Under 3 yrs of age and <15 kg
- use dextrose 25% preload or dilute D50 1:1 with NS slow IVP
