variation and evolution - classification Flashcards
who came up with classification system?
Linnaeus, he classified species into different categories depending on their structure and characteristics
what is the classification system ideas?
- Linnaeus divided all living organisms into 2 kingdoms. animal and plant kingdom
- each kingdom divided into smaller categories
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
(Katie put condom on fred’s giant sausage)
what is the binomial system?
where an organism has a name from its genus and species
what is classification system based on?
characteristics that we can see (shape of body, toes)
however, major advances in biology now as we can look at internal structures using microscopes + also analyse an animals biochemistry for example it’s DNA + look for similarities in other species
what system do scientists now use? developed by who?
three domain system developed by Carl Woese who compared biochemistry if different organisms
what is 3 domain system made up of?
- Archae which are primitive bacteria found in extreme conditions, hot springs
- true bacteria (like the kind that live in human digestive system)
- Eukaryota (animals, plants fungi, protists )
what are evolutionary trees? how to make?
lines to show how closely related organisms are to each other. to make one, scientists can use classification data on living organisms eg their DNA. However for extinct, have to use fossils. this can be a problem as fossil records of many species are incomplete.
