Homeostasis - homeostasis Flashcards
what do enzymes require?
stable conditions because if not they cannot work well if conditions around them change too much
what do our bodies have in order to maintain stable conditions for enzymes?
systems to keep internal conditions optimum for cells to function which is homeostasis
what is homeostasis?
regulation of internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions for function in response to internal + external changes
what does the automatic control system involve?
nervous system or hormones
what are the features of an automatic control system?
(stimulus) receptor cells, coordination centre and effector, (response)
what is the job of the receptor?
it will detect/sense changes in the environment, for example the body’s conditions such as glucose levels or bodies temperature. the change to an environment is a stimulus. it will detect stimulus and then pass information to the coordination centre
what is the job of the co-ordination centre?
It receives and processes information from the receptor. then sends instructions to the effector.
examples of co-ordination centre, brain, pancreas, spinal cord
what is the job of an effector?
it carries out the response and restores optimum levels in the body
example of effectors are muscles or glands
