ecology - trophic levels Flashcards
1
Q
what are herbivores?
A
eat plants or algae
(herbivores are primary consumers)
2
Q
what do carnivores eat?
A
herbivores
carnivores are secondary consumers as they eat another animal
3
Q
what is a tertiary consumer?
A
carnivore that eats other carnivores
4
Q
what are tropic levels?
A
an organisms position on a food chain so primary consumers, secondary consumer, tertiary consumer etc
“trophic” - feeding
5
Q
trophic level 1?
trophic level 2?
trophic level 3?
trophic level 4?
A
producer
primary consumers
secondary consumer
tertiary consumer
6
Q
what are apex predators?
A
carnivores that have no predators themselves
7
Q
what do decomposers break down
A
- dead plants + animals
- waste products such as faeces
8
Q
what happens when decomposers break down dead remains + waste products?
A
- return mineral ions back to soil
- to do this decomposers secrete enzymes into the environment. the enzymes digest dead materials and the small soluble food molecules then diffuse back into the decomposer
