Q

what happens during IVF?

A

fertilisation happens outside of the body. during IVF, mother first treated with FSH and LH causing several eggs to mature which are then collected from mother. then sperm collected from father to fertilise eggs in laboratory. fertilised eggs develop into embryos. once they are tiny balls of cells they are inserted into uterus. these develop inside mother in usual way.

Q

what are the problems with IVF?

A
  • success rate not high
-IVF is emotionally very stressful for both parents and physical demanding on the mother (infertility drugs and collecting eggs)
  • can lead to multiple births. risky for both babies and mother
  • not all embryos created will be transferred into mother (many destroyed which is seen unethical)
  • expensive. ( people think this money could be spent on other medical issues e.g cancer treatments)
