ecology - maintaining biodiversity Flashcards

1
Q

how can we reduce negative effects of humans on biodiversity?

A
  • breeding programmes for endangered species
  • protection and regeneration of rare habits
  • field margins and hedgerows preserve biodiversity on farms
  • governments have taken steps to reduce deforestation (example: Brazilian government have established national parks in attempt to protect amazon rainforest). also they are taking action to reduce carbon dioxide emissions (most of UK electricity generated by renewable methods, wind power. this will reduce global warming)
  • recycling waste materials (normally dumped in landfills destroying habitats). recycle means less waste in landfills and fewer habitats destroyed

Q

how do breeding programmes for endangered animals help maintain biodiversity?

Q

what are wetlands protected against and why?

A

wetlands have been protected so can never be drained as high biodiversity. also some wetlands being re flooded

Q

what does it mean when a farmer goes a field of one crop? how do farmers help this?

A

very few species of plants and animals. low biodiversity. so they leave a strip of land around fields where wild plants + animals leave - field margins
