ecology - role of biotechnology Flashcards

1
Q

how has biotechnology been used in genetic engineering?

A

human insulin been transferred into bacteria. these bacteria now genetically modified and produce insulin. insulin harvested + purified to then treat people with diabetes

Q

what is Golden rice? (biotechnology)

A

rice that has been genetically modified to contain the molecules that the body needs to make vitamin A because a lot of people around the world lack this vitamin which is needed for vision and a lot of people have gone blind due to a lack of it. golden rice can prevent hundreds of thousands of cases of blindness every year

Q

how is mycoprotein produced?

A

in aerobic conditions, the fungus converts the glucose syrup into mycoprotein. biomass is harvested and purified before being made into products
