ecology - land use Flashcards
how do humans reduce amount of land available for plants and animals?
- buildings; factories, houses, airports
- farms and quarries + dumping waste in landfills
this reduces biodiversity
what do peat bogs and pest land contain?
large amounts of dead plant materials. conditions mean decay is very slow. also contain trapped carbon (large amounts)
how are peat bogs/lands reducing biodiversity?
they are being destroyed as leat is used to produce cheap compost for gardens and farms. sometimes burnt to produce energy. this is ruining habitat for plants and animals
what is a big problem with peat?
once used for compost, it begins to decay which releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the environment. when peat is burned it also releases carbon dioxide. this contributes to climate change
what have gardeners stopped buying?
compost made with peat however alternatives are more expensive which could increase price of food
