Homeostasis - the nervous system Flashcards
what are the two parts of the nervous system?
CNS (central nervous sytem)
then the other nerves running to and from the central nervous sytem
how do receptors send information to the central nervous sytem (co-ordination centre)?
they will detect the stimulus, then send electrical impulses down neurones
how does the CNS pass on information?
through electrical impulses
how does an effector work?
usually a muscle that contracts or a gland that secretes a hormone
what does the nervous system enable?
humans to react to their surroundings and coordinate behaviour. this is done through the reflex arc
what happens when you touch a hot object?
- stimulus (heat) is detected by the receptor (skin)
- electrical impulses pass from receptor along sensory neurons to the central nervous system.
- at end of sensory neurone is a synapse where a chemical is released and diffuses to a relay neurone in the CNS where it triggers another electrical impulse
- electrical impulse passes across relay neurone and reaches another synapse. chemical released.
- chemical triggers electrical impulses pass from in a motor neurone
- electrical impulse passes down motor neurone to an effector (muscle)
- muscle contracts and pulls hand away from the heat (response)
what happens during a reflex?
no decision is made by the conscious part of the brain. this makes the reflex an automatic and rapid response to protect us from danger
