Inheritance - meiosis and fetilisation Flashcards
what does meiosis only take place in?
reproductive organs. in humans this is the testes in males and ovaries in females
what are the stages of meiosis?
- all of the chromosomes are copied (chromosomes in pairs)
- cell divided into two
- both of these cells decide one more time forming gametes (chromosomes single)
how many chromosomes does meiosis produce?
half the amount it started with
what does meiosis produce from original cell?
4 gametes which are all genetically different and have different alleles
what happens to the gametes?
join together in fertilisation where the cell now has normal number of chromosomes
what happens after fertilisation?
new cell divides by mitosis creating a clump of identical cells. scientists call this an embryo. as embryo develops, cells differentiate forming different cell types.in animals these include nerve and muscle cells.
