variables Flashcards
define independant variable
the variable in the experiment that is being change to determine if there is a cause and effect relationship between the IV and the DV.
define the dependant variable
the variable that is measure in the study to see if the IV has had an effect on it
define controlled variables
the variables in a study that are kept the same for control and experimental groups, so there is no possibilty for innacurate results.
define extraneous variables
any variables that your not controlling that could ffect outcomes of your research study. if left uncontrolled it can cause innacurate results
examples of extraneous varibles
- mood
- memory capability
- motivation
- personality
how to minimise EV’s
- considering how a sample is obtained
- how paricipants are allocated into control and experimental groups
- considering what experimental design should be used
define confounding variables
a type of extraneous variable that has an impact on the results because it changes the dependant variable rather than the independant variable
