attribution theory Flashcards
what is attribution
the process of attaching meaning to our behaviour, or to other behaviour, by looking for causes to explain the behvaiour.
what was Fritz heirder’s theory of attribution
he theorised that people tend to see the cause of the behaviour or action as either within the person or outside the person. He believed that people are trying to make sense of the social worold and see a cause and effect relationship in behvaiour, even when there is none.
what is dispositional attribution
it is internal attribution. It mean that we assign the cause of behvaiour to internal factors within the person. e.g. attitude, ability, motivaion or personality.
what is situational attribution
it is external attribution. It means that we assign the cause of behaviour to environemental factors external to the person.
e.g. peer pressure, threats and social norms
what is the fundemental attribution error
humnas overestimate the power of the person and underestimate the power of the situation.
