parts of the brain Flashcards
define cerebellum
a portion of the hindbrain tht coordinates volentary muscles moevnment and reflex action
define medulla
a portion of the hindbrain that controls vital activities that we have no consious control over, such as breathing
define brain
the brain is the control centre of the human body
what are the three division of the brain
- hind brain
- midbrain
-forebrain
what is the hindbrain made up of
the hindbrain is made up of th cerebellum and medulla.
what is the function of the hind brain
it is respnsible for balance and coodination
define the forebrain
the forebrain is made of the cerebral cortex, hypothalamus and thalamus and processes information concerning cognative activities, processes sesnory information, emotions and volentary motor activities.
define thalamus
it is in line with our ears, just above the brainstem. it filters and information from almost all the senses ( except for the nose)
define hypothalumus
the hypothalamus is respnsible for motives and emotions. its primary function is too regulate hunger, thirst, bodt temp, and the sleep cycle
what is the role of the cerbral cortex in the forebrain
it is responsible for high level processing of information such as consious experience, volentary actions, language, reasning and intellegence that further divides into three lobes
What are the functions of the left hemisphere
it is responsible for verbal functions such as speaking, reading, writing and understaning language. it is also respnsible for mathmatic processes and logical thinking
what are the roles of the right hemisphere
they are responsible for non verbal activities such as drawing, jigsaw puzzles and art. they are also responsible for spatial tasks such as maps and recignising faces.
explain the corpus collosum
a thick band of fibres that connect the cerebral hemisphere of the brain and allows messages to be tranported from hemisphere to another
