lobes of the brain Flashcards
what are the four lobes of the forebrain cerebral cortex
- frontal lobe
- occipital lobe
- parietal lobe
- temporal lobe
what is the function of the frontal lobe
higher order functions such as planning, problem solving, reasoning, impulse control, volentary movenments
what is the localized funstion areas of the frontal lobe
broca’s area, pre frontal cortex and motor cortex
what is the function of the temporal lobe
language and auditory processes, it recieves sound from the ear but it is also where smell is proccessed
what is the localized function area of the temporal lobe
the wernicke’s area
what is the function of the occipital lobe
visual perception and visual learning, it processes different types of visual stimuli.
what is the localized function area of the occipital lobe
primary visual cortex
what is the function of the parietal lobe
responsible for spatial awarness, propioception and also precesses sensation such as touch, pressure, temperature and pain.
define the prefrontal cortex
it is the cerebral cortex covering the front part of the frontal lobe.
what is aphasia
a condition when damage occurs to portions of the brain that are responsible for language
define the broca’s area
the area of the frontal lobe that is responsible for speech production. it controls fine muscles that articulate speech
define wernickes area
the area of the left temporal lobe that is responsible for understanding lanuage and producing meaningful speech
what are the 5 frontal lobe substructures
- premotor cortex
- motor cortex
- prefrotnal cortex
- broca’s area
what is broca’s aphasia
people with a damged broca’s area will be able to understand speech but cannot properly form words or produce speech
what is wernicke’s aphasia
people with damage to their wernicke’s aphasia cannot understand language but can speak (often gibberish)
