A
  • Child under 5 presenting with abdominal mass
  • Abdominal pain
  • Haematuria
  • Lethargy
  • Fever
  • Hypertension
  • Weight loss

How are Wilms’ tumours diagnosed?

A

USS of the abdomen to visualise the kidneys

CT or MRI to stage tumour

Biopsy to identify histology for definitive diagnosis

How is a Wilms’ tumour managed?

A

Surgical excision of tumour along with affected kidney
(nephrectomy)

Adjuvant treatment
- Chemotherapy
- Radiotherapy

What is the prognosis of a Wilms’ tumour?

A

Early stage with good histology cure up to 90%

Metastatic has a poorer prognosis
