1-2 days later, small mouth ulcers appear
Followed by blistering red spots across body
Spots worst on hands, feet and around mouth
Rash is itchy

Painful mouth ulcers, particularly on tongue
How is HFMD diagnosed?
Clinical appearance of rash
How is HFMD managed?
No treatment
Supportive management, fluids, simple analgesia
Resolves spontaneously 7-10 days
What advice should be given to parents in HFMD?
Highly contagious
Avoid sharing towels, bedding
Wash hands
Careful handling of dirty nappies
What are some rare complications of HFMD?
Dehydration
Bacterial superinfection
Encephalitis
