What are the risk factors for cot death?

A

Prematurity
Low birth weight
Smoking during pregnancy
Male (only slight increased risk)

How is cot death risk reduced?

A
  • Put baby on back when not directly supervised
  • Head uncovered
  • Feet at foot of the bed to prevent them sliding down and under blanket
  • Keep cot clear of lots of toys and blankets
  • Comfortable temperature
  • Avoid smoking
  • Avoid handling baby after smoking
  • Avoid co-sleeping, on sofa or chair
  • If co-sleeping avoid alcohol, drugs, smoking, sleeping tablets or deep sleepers

How do you counsel a parent worried about SIDS?

A

Empathise and be understanding of their anxiety

Give advice that does not imply blame and non-judgemental

Talk about things which increase risk but not cause it

Frame in a positive way, e.g. lots of things to reduce risk

What is the CONI team?

A

Care of next infant

Supports parents with next infant after a cot death

Provides extra support and home visits, resuscitation training and access to equipment e.g. movement monitors that alarm if baby stops breathing for a prolonged period
