When does SIDS usually occur?
Within first 6 months
What are the risk factors for cot death?
Prematurity
Low birth weight
Smoking during pregnancy
Male (only slight increased risk)
How is cot death risk reduced?
- Put baby on back when not directly supervised
- Head uncovered
- Feet at foot of the bed to prevent them sliding down and under blanket
- Keep cot clear of lots of toys and blankets
- Comfortable temperature
- Avoid smoking
- Avoid handling baby after smoking
- Avoid co-sleeping, on sofa or chair
- If co-sleeping avoid alcohol, drugs, smoking, sleeping tablets or deep sleepers
How do you counsel a parent worried about SIDS?
Empathise and be understanding of their anxiety
Give advice that does not imply blame and non-judgemental
Talk about things which increase risk but not cause it
Frame in a positive way, e.g. lots of things to reduce risk
What support is available for SIDS?
Lullaby trust
Charity to help support families affected
Bereavement services and counselling
What is the CONI team?
Care of next infant
Supports parents with next infant after a cot death
Provides extra support and home visits, resuscitation training and access to equipment e.g. movement monitors that alarm if baby stops breathing for a prolonged period
