A

Condition caused by staphylococcus aureus

Produces epidermolytic toxins

These toxins break down proteins between skin cells

A

Children under 5 years

Older children usually have developed immunity to epidermolytic toxins

How does staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome present?

A

Generalised patches of erythema on the skin

The skin then looks thin and wrinkled

Followed by formation of bullae which burst and leave very sore erythematous skin below

A

Fever
Irritability
Lethargy
Dehydration

If untreated can lead to sepsis and potentially death

Patients are prone to dehydration
