What is pityriasis rosea?
Generalised, self-limiting rash
What is pityriasis rosea caused by?
Unknown cause
May be caused by HHV-6 or HHV-7
No organism established
How does pityriasis rosea present?
Prodromal symptoms
Headache
Tiredness
Appetite loss
Flu-like symptoms
2 days prior
Rash starts with herald patch
Faint red or pink, scaly, oval shaped lesion over 2cm in diameter on the torso
Widespread faint red or pink, slightly scaly, oval shaped lesions
Can be in christmas tree fashion
How does pityriasis rosea appear in dark-skinned patients?
Lesions grey coloured, lighter or darker than skin colour
How long does it take for the rash to disappear in pityriasis rosea?
3 months
Can leave discolouration where lesions were, will resolve in a few months after
What is the management for pityriasis rosea?
No treatment
Will resolve spontaneously
Patient education and reassurance
Emollients, antihistamines for itching
