What is seborrhoeic dermatitis?
Inflammatory skin condition affecting sebaceous glands
Which areas can be particularly affected by seborrhoeic dermatitis?
Scalp
Nasolabial folds
Eyebrows
What does seborrhoeic dermatitis cause?
Erythema
Dermatitis
Crusted dry skin
How does seborrhoeic dermatitis affect infants?
Crusted dry flaky scalp
Cradle cap
What is thought to play a role in seborrhoeic dermatitis development?
Malassezia yeast
What does infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis cause?
(Cradle cap)
Crusted flaky scalp
Self limiting, usually resolves by 4 months old, can last until 12 months
How is infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis treated?
Applying baby oil, vegetable oil or olive oil then massaging and washing off
If not effective, white petroleum jelly can be used overnight to soften crusted areas before washing off in the morning
Topical clotrimazole or miconazole used for 4 weeks if not responsive
Dermatology referral
How does seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp present?
Mild
Flaky itchy skin on the scalp (dandruff)
More severe
More dense oily scaly brown crusting
More often in adults
What is the first line for seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp?
Ketoconazole shampoo
Left on for 5 minutes before washing off
Topical steroids if severe itching
Often reoccurs after treatment
How is seborrhoeic dermatitis of the face and body treated?
Anti-fungal cream
e.g. clotrimazole or miconazole for up to 4 weeks
Local areas can benefit from topical steroids e.g. hydrocortisone
Severe or unresponsive needs dermatology referral
