What is mumps?
Self-limiting viral infection spread by respiratory droplets
What is the incubation period for mumps?
14-25 days
How long does mumps last?
1 week usually

How does mumps present initially?
Prodrome phase
- Occurs a few days before parotid swelling
- Flu-like symptoms
How does mumps present after the prodrome phase?
- Parotid gland swelling, unliteral or bilateral
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Lethargy
- Reduced appetite
- Headache
- Dry mouth
What symptoms of mumps complications can a person also present with?
- Abdominal pain (pancreatitis)
- Testicular pain (orchitis)
- Confusion, neck stiffness and headache (meningitis or encephalitis)
How is mumps diagnosed?
PCR testing on saliva swab
Blood or saliva can also be tested for antibodies to mumps
What must be done for all mumps cases?
Notify Public Health, suspected and confirmed
How is mumps managed?
Supportive treatment
- Rest
- Fluids
- Analgesia
Self-limiting condition
What are some potential complications of mumps?
Pancreatitis
Orchitis
Meningitis
Sensorineural hearing loss
