Unit 7: Industrialization And Economic Development Patterns And Processes Chapter 18: Topic 7.4 Flashcards
- Cultural barriers prohibit participation in the economy
- Lack of educational opportunities can reduce employment options
- Limited access to loans and other resources makes starting or expanding a business difficult
Barriers to gender equality
Women rarely obtain upper-level jobs in companies, the civil service, or in governments. In top levels of corporations and politics, women must overcome cultural attitudes that cause people not to see them as leaders.
Glass Ceiling
Transnational corporations = hire women because of availability and cheap labor = expanded employment opportunities. Low birth rates, educational opportunities
Increased opportunities for women
International non-profit agencies. These empower women to find jobs outside the home.
Non-governmental organizations
Provide loans often to women to start or expand a business.
Microloans/microcredit
Middle class lived and worked in urban areas but in widely scattered locations. The spatial distribution of the middle class made building a sense of unity in the new class difficult. Working class lived in less desirable urban neighborhoods outside of the CBD. Created strong social bonds which formed labor unions and gave them a push towards better working conditions and higher wages.
How the IR created new neighborhoods for the middle and working classes
