Unit 3- Muscarinic Antagonists Flashcards
Muscarinic Antagonists
Block Ach from binding and activating muscarinic receptors, nonspecific, difficult to achieve selective action
Atropine
Muscarinic blocking agent, treats bradyarrhythmia, dilates pupil, treat anti-cholinesterase toxicity
Muscarinic Antagonist Effects
Increase HR and cardiac output, relax GI, dilate bronchioles, pupil dilation, urine retention, minimal CNS effects
Use of Muscarinic Antagonists
Antispasmodics, reduce GI hypermobility, decrease hypertonicity of uterus, bladder, ureter, bile duct, and bronchiles
Muscarinic Antagonist Adverse Effects
Excess salivation, vomiting, increased IOP
Glycopyrrolate
Antimuscarinic, lower chance tachyarrhythmia, decreases gastric secretion, reduces intestinal motility, reduces excessive secretion
N-butylscopolamine bromide
Antimuscarinic, treats colic, fewer systemic side effects, airway obstruction in horse
Propantheline
Used in dogs with myasthenia gravis that have muscarinic side effects, antisecretory agent to treat diarrhea, relax rectum in horse
