u4 aos2 dp11 Flashcards
1
Q
biological interventions
A
- benzodiazepines
- relaxation techniques (breathing retraining, exercise)
2
Q
psychological interventions
A
- CBT
- systematic desensitisation
3
Q
social interventions
A
- psychoeducation
4
Q
benzodiazepines (GABA agonist)
A
- depressants
- increase GABA’s inhibitory function
- relieve syptoms of anxiety by reducing physiological symptoms
5
Q
agonists vs antagonists
A
- agonists - stimulate neurotransmitters activity
- antagonists - inhibit neurotransmitters activity
6
Q
advantages of benzodiazepines
A
- help with occasional, unavoidable encounters with phobic stimulus
- few side effects
- highly effective short term
7
Q
disadvantages og benzodiazepines
A
- highly addictive
- not for long term
- more impulside
- treat symptoms, not cause
8
Q
breathing retraining
A
- teaches correct breathing to promote relaxation
- inhibits f-f-f
- return CNS to normal state
- helps to feel in control of anxiety
9
Q
exercise
A
- promotes relaxation
- provides distraction
- reduces production of stress hormones
- release endorphins, promoting well being
10
Q
CBT
A
- change negative thoughts and behaviours
- improves coping skills
- target avoidance/ safety behaviour
- short term and long term
11
Q
systematic desensitisation
A
- gradual exposure
- help cope than avoid
- replace anxiety response with relaxation response
- through classical conditioning (unlearn phobic stimulus/ anxiety and reassociate phobic stimulus/ relaxation)
12
Q
steps in systematic desensitisation
A
- learn relaxation technique - decrease physiological symptoms
- phobic stimulus is broken down into a list from least anxiety producing, to most anxiety producing (fear hierarchy)
- pairing phobic stimulus with relaxation technique and gradually working way up hierarchy. can not move on until relaxed at that level
13
Q
psychoeducation
A
- info about mental disorder and treatment
- increases control and capability of coping
- challenges anxious/ unrealistic thoughts
- targets avoidance behaviour
- teach support methods to family
