u3 - aos1 dp5 Flashcards
parkinson’s disease
CNS neurodegenerative disease
characterised by motor and non- motor symptoms
degeneration of nervous system
develop slowly
motor symptoms
used for diagnosis
- tremors
- muscle rigidity (stiffness)
- slowness of voluntary movement (bradykinesia)
- posture, balance, walking problems
non - motor symptoms
- decreased sense of smell
- sweating/ sensitivity to temp
- fatigue
- mental health problems (confusion, panic, anxiety, depression)
- cognitive function problems (slow thinking, impaired planning, decision making, memory loss)
substantia nigra
midbrain
role in the control of voluntary uscle movement to execute smooth and coordinated manner
motor symptoms are due to degeneration of neurons in substantia nigra
neurons in SN produce dopamine
dopamine
neurotransmitter
excretory (mainly) and inhibitory
role in movement, learning, emotional experience, focus, motivation, arousal
dopamine and substantia nigra
if fewer neurons in SN, less dopamine will be produced
treatment of parkinson’s
no cure
medication can relieve motor symptoms
levodopa - converted into dopamine by neurons
dopamine agonists - mimic role of dopamine
