operant conditioning
type of learning where consequences of a behavior determine the likelihood that it will be performed again in the future
effects of operant conditioning
tend to repeat behaviour that has desirable concequense (reinforcement)
tend not to repeat behaviour that has undesirable consequences (punishment)
3 phase model of operant conditioning
- antecedent
- behaviour
- consequence
definitions of three phases
- stimulus that precedes behaviour
- voluntary action due to stimulus and causes a consequence to follow
- occurs immediately after behaviour and has an effect on the occurrence of behaviour in the future
consequences
reinforcement - consequence that strengthens likelihood of behaviour
- positive reinforcement (give something of value)
- negative reinforcement (removing something not of value)
punishment - consequence that weakens likelihood of behaviour
- positive punishment (give something not of value)
- negative punishment (take something of value) response cost
influencing factors
order of presentation
time lapse
appropriateness of consequences
key processes in operant conditioning
- stimulus generalisation
- stimulus discrimination
- extinction
- spontaneous recovery
stimulus generalisation
correct response is made to another stimulus that is similar (not necessarily identicle) to origional present when the behaviour was reinforced
stimulus discrimination
organism akes correct response to stimulus and is reinforced, but does not respond to any other stimulus
extinction
gradual decrease in strength of learned response when reinforcing consequences are removed
spontaneous recovery
after extinction of response, organism will show response again in absence of any reinforcement
