sleep disturbances
any sleep related problem that disrupts an individuals normal sleep wake cycle
- temporary, occasional, permanent
sleep disorder
sleep disturbance that regularly disrupts sleep and causing stress or impairments in daily waking hours
primary sleep disorder
cannot be attributed to another condition

secondary speel disorders
results from another condition

sleep disorders that produce difficulty initiating, maintaining or timing sleep
- narcolepsy
- sleep onset insomnia
sleep onset insomnia
- persistent difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep
- failure to fall asleep within 30 min
- reduced amount of sleep
- at least 3 times a week for at least 3 months
- not due to another disorder or substance
- causes problems in everyday functioning
parasomnias
sleep disorders characterised by the occurrence of inappropriate/ abnormal physiological or psychological activity during sleep to wake transitions
- sleep apnea
- sleep walking
sleep walking
physically getting up and walking or engaging in activities whilst still asleep
- eyes open
- basic tasks
- no more than 15 min
- if uninterrupted, will return to bed
- cannot communicate
- during stage 3 and 4 (first 3rd of sleep)
- disrupts sleep wake cycle
- feel tired next day
