1
Q
biological rhythms
A
cyclic changes in bodily functions that repeat themselves through time in the same order
- maintained and controlled by internal mechanism (biological block)
- circadian or ultradian rhythm
2
Q
circadian rhythms
A
changes in bodily functions over 24 hours
- sleep- wake cycle
- internally produced + influenced by external factors
3
Q
ultradian rhythm
A
bodily functions that occur in a cycle less than 24 hours
-sleep
4
Q
types of sleep
A
-NREM
- REM
- cycle of 90 minutes
5
Q
NREM sleep
A
- 4 stages
- 80%
- more at start, decreases through the night
- physical restoration of body
6
Q
stage 1
A
- first fall asleep
- relaxed state
- hypnogogic state (transition state)
- hypnic jerk
- reduced alpha - increased theta
- 5-10, lengthens
- eyes roll slowly, muscle relax, heart and breathing decrease
7
Q
stage 2
A
- 50%
- 10 -15 m, lengthens
- sleep spindles (short, rapid bursts of brain activity)
- k complexes
- eyes stop rolling, muscles relax, breathing and heart rate continue to decrease
8
Q
stage 3
A
- beginning of deep sleep
- 3-10 m
- some delta, maily theta
- less responsive to external stimuli (harder to wake)
- heart rate, breathing and body temp drop, no eye movement
9
Q
stage 4
A
- deepest stage
- mainly delta
- hard to wake (sleep inertia)
- 20- 40 m, decreases
- 10-15%
- muscles completely relaxed, no eye movement, heart rate, breathing and temp at lowest
- sleep phenomenons (sleep walking talking, night terrors)
10
Q
REM sleep
A
- eyes move rapidly
- loss of muscle tone
- vivid dreams occur
- easily woken
- 20-25% REM
- lengthen
- paradoxical sleep
- high activity within the body (luctuating heart rate, breathing)
- beta waves
- replenishes/ restoration of mind
