Types Of Training Flashcards
What are the 7 types of training
- circuit training
- continuous training
- fartlek training
- interval training or high-intensity interval training
- static stretching
- weight training
- plyometric training
What is circuit training
A number of different exercises or activities arranged in a circuit
What Are the advantages of circuit training
- varied so people don’t get bored
- easily adapted for different levels
- Easily varied for different muscle groups
What are the disadvantages of circuit training
- requires a lot of equipment
- time to set up
- large amount of space needed
What is continuous training
Taking part in sustained exercise at a constant rate without any rests
What is continuous training good for improving
Cardiovascular endurance
What are the advantages of continuous training
- doesn’t require much equipment
- good for aerobic fitness and losing weight
- can be done anywhere
- simple to do
What are the disadvantages of continuous training
- time-consuming
- can get boring
- Not useful for game players because it doesn’t improve anaerobic fitness
What is interval training or high intensity interval training
Involves periods of intense work followed by rest periods
What is interval training good for improving
- speed
- muscular endurance
- anaerobic fitness
Advantages of interval training
- good for gameplayers because you can mix aerobic and anaerobic exercise
- easy to adapt to different activities or fitness levels
- No specialised equipment needed
- can do anywhere
What are the disadvantages of interval training
- can get boring
- need to time rest and work periods well
- time consuming when resting and not doing the activity
What is weighttraining
Involves using freestanding weights or fixed weights attached to weight training equipment
What is weighttraining good for improving
- muscular endurance
- speed
- power
- strength
What advantages of weight training
- easy to show progression
- increases muscle size and power
- assists recovery after injury
- improve muscle strength and tone
Disadvantages of weight training
- need to have access to a gym which may be costly
- freestanding weights may cause injury if dropped
- Specialist equipment needed
- does not help general fitness
What is fartlek training
Involves fast and slow running over a variety of terrain
What is fartlek training good for improving
- aerobic endurance
- anaerobic endurance
What are the advantages of fartlek training
- can be easily adapted for different sports and fitness levels
- good for sports that require a change of pace
Disadvantages of fartlek training
- can become boring
- difficult to see how much effort is being exerted
- Easy to skip the hard bits
- must take place in specific locations eg. Hills and mountains
What is static stretching
When stretches are held in isometric contractions for a period of time to improve flexibility
What is the advantage of static stretching
- can be done anywhere
- no equipment needed
- can adapt time for different levels of fitness
Disadvantage of static stretching
- only improves flexibility
What is plyometric training
Increases power by using an eccentric contraction followed by larger concentric contraction using exercises such as bounding or depth jumping
What are the advantages of plyometric training
- can do most places
- can be adapted for specific training programs
Disadvantages of plyometric training
- very specific and doesn’t help general fitness
- can become easily injured by the leaps and bounds
- may need equipment
