Definition of skill
Skills Are learnt actions with the intention of bringing about predetermined results with maximum certainty and minimum outlay of time and energy
Definition of ability
Abilities are inherited from your parents. They are stable traits that determine an individual potential to learn or acquire skills
What are the categories of skill ?
- basic —— complex
- open —— closed
- self-paced—— externally-paced
- gross——fine
Describe a basic skill
- few decisions to be made
- tend to be taught as a beginner
- few decisions actually affect the success of the movement
- learnt fairly quickly
Describe a complex skill
- complex decisions made
- lots of decisions to be made in order to be successful
- can take considerable time to master
Describe an open Skill
- unstable environment
- The way you do the skill is affected by the people around you
Describe a closed skill
- Stable environment
- The way you do the skill is not affected by the people around you
Describe a self-paced skill
- The start of the movement is controlled by the performer
- speed, pace or rate of the movement is controlled by you

- The start of the movement is controlled by external factors
- The speed, pace or rate of the movement is controlled by external factors

- involves big movements of the body
