Skeletal-system Flashcards
What is an origin?
The end of the muscle attached to a fixed bone
What is an insertion?
The end of the muscle attached to the bone moves
What are the functions of the skeletal system?
- support
- protection
- movement
- shape
- blood production
- mineral storage
Acronym to remember the functions of the skeletal system
Sarah the Prime Minister Sucks Mince Pies
How does the skeletal system help with mineral storage?
Bones store calcium and phosphorus, which can be released into the blood when needed
How does the skeletal system help with blood production?
The marrow in the long bones produce red and white blood cells
How does the skeletal system give support?
It keeps us upright
How does the skeletal system help with protection?
Some bones protect vital organs
How does the skeletal system help with movement?
It helps the body move by providing anchor points for the muscles to pull against e.g. insertion
How does the skeletal system help with shape?
Skeleton gives us our build
Eg short or tall
What are the four types of bones?
- long
- short
- flat (plate)
- irregular
What do you long bones do?
for movement to generate strength and speed
What do short bones do?
Use for shock absorption and spreading the load
What do flat bones do?
Protect vital organs
What do irregular bones do?
Provide shape and protection
