Types of epithelial cells Flashcards
4 basic tissue types
Epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous tissue
Epithelial
Composed of cells and no direct blood supply
Form all of the internal and external body coverings
Basal lamina
Basement membrane upon which all epithelial tissue rests on
Supporting foundation
Simple epithelium
Epithelial cells form a single layer resting on the basal lamina
Simple squamous epithelium
Consists of only one layer of flattened where the width of the cells exceed the height
Found in lining of blood vessels, walls
If the nuceli protrude, creating an irregular surface, in blood vessels may signify the beginning of life threatening problems.
Simple columnar epithelium
Single row of cells like buildings
Height is bigger than width
Stomach lining and intestines
Simple squamous epithelium
Consists of only one layer of flattened where the width of the cells exceed the height
Found in lining of blood vessels, walls of the lung alveoli
If the nuceli protrude, creating an irregular surface, in blood vessels may signify the beginning of life threatening problems.
Found in: Lung Alveoli and kidney filtration units
Pseudo stratified columnar epithelial
Salivary duct in male uretha
Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium
Cilia
Lining of fallopian tub
Pseudo stratified columnar epithelial
Parotid Salivary duct in male uretha
Stratified epithelium
Two or more layers of cells extending above the basal lamina
Provides more resistence and better protection
Stratified squamous epithelium
Multiple layers of progressively flattened cells that have rapid mitosis and renewal
Skin mouth esophagus and vagina
Stratified cubodial epithelium and stratified columnar epithelium
Rare found in some salivary ducts
Pharynx larynx epiglottis
