Fetal Circulation Flashcards
Placenta
Provides the Fetus with oxygen and nutrients by the Umbilical vein and deals with waste products (CO2) from the umbilical arteries
Umbilical Vein
Single Vein
OXYGENATED BLOOD
Umbilical Arteries
Two arteries
DEOXYGENATED BLOOD
Five Specilizations of the circulatory system on the unborn child
- Umbilical vein
- Ductus Venosus
- Foramen Ovale
- Ductus Arteriosus
- Umbilical arteries
Ductus Venosus
Special channel that bypasses the liver and connect the solitary umbilical vein directly to the inferior vena cava
Fetal blood flow
Deoxygenated venous blood is retured from the head, neck and upper extremities by the superior vena cava entering the right atrium
Along with blood from inferior vena cava (Oxygenated blood)
Foramen Ovale
Oval opening in the fetal heart that allows for blood to pass from right atrium to the left atrium
AVOIDING the immature lungs
Ductus Arteriosus
Connects the pulmonary trunk to the arch of the aorta
Helps to move blood away from the non-functional fetal lungs
Allowing the thoracic and Abdominal Aorta to have oxygen and nutrients
Two common iliac arteries
Form the external and internal iliac arteries
Pass on either side of the urinary bladder and penetrate the umbilicus
Umbilicus
Belly Button
Ligamentum Vensosum
Formed by blood clotting in the ductus venosus after birth
Ligamentum Arteriosum
Formed by blood clotting in the ductus arteriosus after birth
Fossa Ovalis
The closed foramen ovale after about one year in the heart
Round Ligament of the liver (Ligamentum Teres) and medial umbilical ligaments
Portions of the umbilical vein and umbilical arteries form scar tissue after birth
