Blood Cells Flashcards
Circulating Blood
Consists of Formed elements suspended within blood plasma
Formed Elements
Red blood cells, types of white blood cells and platelets
Red Blood Cells
RBCs or Erythrocytes Small circular biconcave disc Enclosed cytoplasm devoid of a nucleus Contains hemoglobin Produced in red bone marrow, Life span of 120 days
Hemoglobin
Molecule responsible for transporting oxygen and some carbon dioxide to and from the tissues
Granulocytes
Cells containing granules Basophils Eosinophils Neutrophils All 3 based on color
Basophilis
Blue- Loving
Bilobed nucleus that contains an large amount of granules
Release histamine and heparin (Anticoagulant)
Limited phagocytosis of foreign matter
Eosinophils
Red loving
Bi-lobed nucleus
bright red granules
Responsible for allergic reactions, limited phagocytosis and response to parasites
Neutrophils
Pale/ neutral granules multi-lobed (3 to 5) First line of defense against bacterial infections and inflammatory reactions Efficient in phagocytosis Most numerous of white blood cells
Agranulocytes (Nongranulocytes)
Non granulated cells
Monocytes
Lymphocytes
Monocytes
Large rounded nucleus
Circulate in the blood, penetrate the connective tissues and transformed into phagocytic macrophages
Lymphocytes (Small and Large)
Concerned with Humoral Immunity
Production of antibodies
Small = Older
Large = Younger
Platelets
Do not include a nucleus
Are released pieces of megakaryocytes found in red bone marrow cavities
Blood clot formation
