Respirartory System Flashcards
Respiratory System
Responsible for the gas exchange that occurs btw the atmosphere and the blood stream
Nasal Cavities
Air first enter here
Pharynx
Air passes from the nasal cavitity to here
Passage way that transports liquids and solids to the digestive system
Larynx
(the voice box)
Air passes from the pharynx to here
Composed on nine hyaline and elastic cartilages
Thyroid Cartilage
Largest and most prominent cartilage of the larynx
Trachea
Transports air from the larynx into the thoracic cavity
Right and Left primary Bronchi
Located Fifth thoracic vertebra
The trachea branches here to form and thus the right and left lung
Hyaline cartilages extend down to open the airways
Left Lung
Consists of two lobes (Upper and Lower)
Separated by an oblique Fissure
Contain a cardiac notch, seen on the medial surface where the heart is
Right lung
Contains three lobes (Upper, middle, and lower)
Separated by an oblique fissure and the horizontal fissure
Difference in size is due to the heart
Right primary bronchus
Larger in diameter and more vertical than the left
Food particle have a tendency to drop into here than the left side
Secondary Bronchi
Right and Left Primary bronchi branch into 5 of these for each lobe.
Further divide into ten tertiary (Segmental) bronchi on each side
Tertiary Bronchi
Accompanying pulmonary vessels each supply a bronchopulmonary segment.
Allows for surgeons to only remove this part on an individual over the lobe or an entire lung
Mediastinum
Region btw the lungs that contains the heart, thymus gland, lower segment of the trachea, part of esophagus and portions of the great vessels.
extends from the diaphragm, past the medial third of the clavicle on into the lower neck.
Apex of the lung
Portion of the lung that reaches beyond the clavicle into the neck
Pleura
Covers the lung, serous membrane friction less movement of the underlying organs
