Transcription Flashcards
Transcription
DNA -> mRNA
Where does Transcription take place in Prokaryotes?
cytoplasm
Where does transcription take place in eukaryotes?
nucleus
what is the coding strand called?
Sense strand
what is the non-coding strand or the template strand called?
non-sense strand
RNA strand will be complimentary to what strand?
the template strand. the RNA strand will look a lot like the coding strand
Promoter
Recruits RNA polymerase to come bind to DNA. Rna Polymerase recognizes the sequence of the promoter region and begins there. It then runs into the beginning of the gene called the start site.
Where does transcription begin?
Start site
Does RNA polymerase need a primer?
no
What is monocystronic?
Have 1 gene on RNA. Eukaryotes
What is polycystronic?
1 RNA, several gene products. Prokaryotes
RNA polymeras I
rRNA
RNA polymerase II
mRNA
RNA polymerase III
tRNA
Promoter in eukaryotes
TATA box (-25)
Promoter in Prok
-35 element, -10 Pridnode sequence (AT rich)
exons
part that code for a protein
introns
Part that need cut out
Splicing
Bring the exons together after the introns have been cut out. only happens in eukaryotes
Before being sent to nucleus for translation, what needs added to strand?
5’ cap and a poly A tail.
Where is the bulk of gene regulation?
Transcription
Lac Operon
transcription regulation
