Q

Dietary uptake of lipids

A

Lumen of small intestine. Lipase breaks down triglycerides to monos and fatty acids for transport. Then back to triglycerides to be stored in adipose tissue

Q

Do carbs or fats store more energy?

A

Fats. In suagrs, it’s more oxidized, so less energy can be produced.

Q

Catabolism of Fatty Acids

A

When glucagon is present, triglycerides are broken down via lipase into glycerol and FA’s. It then goes to liver and then glycolysis or gluconeogensis. OR the FA’s/glycerols go to Acetyl CoA in mitochondria of other tissues and then enters the CAC cycle.

A

CoA activates beta oxidation. Thyolisis.oxidation and reduction gives us FADH2 and NADH.

Q

Unsaturated fatty acid

A

double bonds. the bonds are not “saturated” with hydrogen bonds. Less energy and you get one less FADH2.
