- Kingdom
- Class
- Genus
- Species
Should the first letter of the genus be capitalised?
Yes
Should the species be in italics and lowercase?
Yes
Why are organisms put into groups?
To make it easier to identify and study them
Define hierarchy
Large groups can be subdivided into smaller groups which do not overlap
What are the three domains?
-Archea
-Eukarya
-Bacteria
Give an example of a kingdom
Animal kingdom
Define species
A group of similar organisms that can produce fertile offspring
What is the purpose of the binomial naming system?
Enables scientists to communicate about organisms in a standard way which helps to avoid the confusion of common names (universal)
What is the purpose of the phylogenetic classification system?
A phylogenetic classification system attempts to arrange species into groups based on their evolutionary origins and relationships
What is each group called?
A taxon
What is courtship behaviour?
Carried out by organisms to attract a mate of the right species
What are some examples of simple courtship behaviour?
-Releasing a chemical
-Using sound
-Visual displays
Give some examples of complex courtship behaviours
-Dancing
-Building
How does courtship behaviour allow members of the same species to recognise each other?
-Specific to each species
-Only members of the same species will do and respond to that behaviour
