Topic 4-Phylogenetic Classification Flashcards
What is taxonomy?
biological classification
What does phylogenetic classification system enable?
arrange species into groups based on their evolutionary origins and relationships
Is there an overlap between groups?
No
What is each group called?
A taxon
What is the highest rank called?
A domain
What has a major role in the classification of organisms into the three domain?
Cell type- prokaryotic and eukaryotic
What are the 3 domains?
Archaea (prokaryotes)
Bacteria (prokaryotes)
Eukarya (eukaryotes)
Where were archaea first discovered living
In extreme environments
What do aracheal cells not have?
no nucleus and so are prokaryotic
What properties separate bacteria and archaea?
Unique lipids are found in the membranes of their cells
No peptidoglycan in their cell walls
Ribosomal structure (particularly that of the small subunit) are more similar to the eukaryotic ribosome than that of the bacteria
Is archeas DNA transcription to eukearyotic or prokaryotic?
Eukaryotic
Arearchea similar in size to bacteria?
Yes (metabolism is similar)
Are bacteria prokaryotic?
Yes
Do bacteria vary in size?
Yes
How do bacterial cells divide?
Binary fission
