Topic 1- Bio molecules key terms Flashcards
What are the key molecules that are required to build structures that enable organisms to function?
Carbohydrates
Proteins
Lipids
Nucleic Acids
Water
What are monomers?
smaller units from which larger molecules are made
Define polymer
molecules made from a large number of monomers joined together in a chain
Name the 4 organic (contain carbon and hydrogen) compounds
-Carbohydrates
-Proteins
-Nucleic acids
-Lipids
Why are carbon compounds important for organic compounds
-Each carbon atom can form four covalent bonds – this makes the compounds very stable (covalent bonds require a lot of energy to break)
-Carbon atoms can form covalent bonds with oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur
-Carbon atoms can bond to form straight chains, branched chains or rings
Define polymerisation
monomers that bond with many repeating subunits to form large molecules polymers
Define macromolecules
very large molecule that have a very high molecular mass
Why re not all macromolecules polymers?
the subunits of polymers have to be the same repeating units
