Topic 3- Digestion and absorption Flashcards
What is the function of digestion?
-a process in which relatively large, insoluble biological molecules in food (such as starch, and proteins) are hydrolysed into smaller, soluble molecules that can be absorbed across the cell membranes into the bloodstream and delivered to cells in the body
What are essential for the process of digestion as they catalyse the hydrolysis?
Enzymes
What is the purpose of these small, soluble (such as glucose and amino acids) molecules?
-provide cells with energy (via respiration)
-build other molecules for cell growth, repair and function
What are proteins hydrolysed into?
Amino acids
What are carbohydrates hydrolysed into?
Simple sugars
What are lipids hydrolysed into?
-Glycerol
-Fatty acids
What structures does the human digestive system consist of?
-Glands
-Stomach
-Small intestine
-Liver
-Large intestine
The salivary gland and glands in the pancreas are both involved with digestion, what do they produce?
Digestive juices
What are the stomach and small intestine the site of?
Digestion
What is the function of the liver?
Produces bile
The small intestine is the site of digestion and what else?
Absorption
What is the large intestine the site of?
Water reabsorption
