Topic 2 -T lymphocyte response Flashcards
What are lymphocytes?
White blood cells
What response are they involved in?
Specific immune response
Are they smaller or bigger than lysosomes
Smaller
What fills most of the cell?
A nucleus
When are they produced?
In the bone marrow before birth
What are the 2 types of lymphocytes?
-T lymphocytes (T cells)
-B lymphocytes (B cells)
Where do immature T cells mature?
In the thymus
Why are immature t cells different from mature cells?
have specific cell surface receptors called T-cell receptors
Give 2 features of these receptors.
-a similar structure to antibodies
-specific to one antigen
When are t lymphocytes activated?
when they encounter (and bind to) their specific antigen that is being presented by one of the host’s cells
What is an antigen-presenting host cell
a macrophage or a body cell that has been invaded by a pathogen and is displaying the antigen on its cell surface membrane
How do activated t cells divide to increase in number?
Mitosis
These T-lymphocytes differentiate into two main types of T cell, what are they?
-helper T cells
-cytotoxic T cells(also known as killer T cells)
