Topic 3 Membranes Flashcards
Sheets of tissue covering or lining a part of the body is known as?
Membranes
Most membranes are epithelial tissue with underlying CT layer called?
Epithelial membranes
Names the types of epithelial membranes (3)
Mucous
Serous
Cutaneous
Aka for Mucous Membrane
Mucosa
They line a body cavity that opens directly to the exterior;
Epithelium with a CT base
Mucous membranes
List examples of mucous membranes
GI tract, respiratory tract, reproductive tract
Mucous membranes’ functions (site dependent) (2)
Protection (tight junctions, contains goblet cells)
Absorption
Type of membrane that lines a body cavity that does not open directly to the exterior;
Also covers organs with the cavity
Serous membrane
Serous membranes have 2 layers - name them
Parietal layer: lines the cavity wall (lines inside)
Eg. Parietal pleura (rib cage)
Visceral layer: covers adheres to the organs cavity
Eg. Visceral pleura (lungs)
Examples of serous membranes
Pleura, pericardium, peritoneum
Which membrane does the simple epithelium secretes serous fluid (for lubrication)
Serous membrane
Cutaneous membranes aka?
Skin
This membrane covers the surface of the body;
It includes the epidermis and dermis
Cutaneous membrane
Type of membrane that line freely moveable cavities; do not open to the exterior; no epithlium
Synovial membrane
Type of membrane that is made up of a layer of synoviocytes with a CT base
Function: Synovial fluid lubricates and nourishes joint cartilage, contains macrophages that help fight infections a clean up within cavity joint
Synovial membrane
